You chase a rumor about halibut birria and suddenly you’re eating at a picnic table next to a food truck. That’s Columbia for you.

Around here, the taco game runs from Smashing Grapes’ braised short rib, plated like art between live music sets, to the charcoal-kissed tripa at Taqueria Los Perez, where the smoke hits you before the door does. I hit ten spots and ate enough tortillas to build a small fort.

The list runs from upscale sit-downs to trucks that flip late-night deals. Just know the crab guacamole at Lime & Salt is not a suggestion.

Best halal birria around
Three sauces, pure flavor
Fast, polite, friendly service
Picnic tables for eating
Top food truck in town

I chased a rumor about halal birria and ended up at a food truck with picnic tables. DMV Taqueria gets it right. The birria is rich, beefy, and somehow both tender and crisp at the edges. Three sauces sit on the side, and each one does something different. I tried all three. No regrets. Service is fast and friendly, the kind of polite that feels genuine. You can sit outside and eat while trucks roll past. This is the top truck in town, and I’m not being dramatic. I’d drive across Columbia for these tacos. Maybe I already did.

Tender shrimp, great drinks
Tuesday taco discounts worth it

Lime & Salt does a few things dangerously well. The crab guacamole is not optional. It's mandatory, and it's worth every penny. The shrimp tacos came out tender, not rubbery, which is honestly rarer than it should be. Ingredients taste fresh, and the prices feel fair for the area. The staff moves quick and smiles while doing it. Drinks are strong. My one tip: hit the Tuesday taco discount. You'll save cash and still eat like you splurged. This place is a solid middle-ground spot, not too fancy, not too divey. Just right.

I walked into Taqueria Los Perez and smelled charcoal before I even ordered. That's a good sign. The lengua and tripa come with that smoky kiss you can't fake. The birria tacos arrive with melty cheese that stretches like a promise. Portions are generous and the prices are fair. The family-run vibe is real, and it shows in the way they treat you. Quick service, friendly staff, no pretension. I left full and happy. This is the kind of taqueria you hope to stumble upon. I'll be back, probably soon.

Taqueria Los Primos might be the late-night hero Columbia didn't know it needed. I stopped by for lunch, but the steak burrito has my name written on it for future visits. It's huge and satisfying. The birria quesadilla gets rave reviews from the table next to me, and I can't argue. Chicken quesadillas are flavorful without being greasy. Lunch service is fast, which matters when you're on a clock. This place isn't fancy, but it's honest. Worth a return trip, especially after hours. I've already planned my next excuse to go back.

Tortas Y Tacos La Chiquita is a no-frills gem, and I mean that as a compliment. The horchata is killer, and the atole is even better if you're feeling adventurous. Chicken tacos pack a bold punch, the kind of flavor that lingers. The staff checks on you constantly, which borders on attentive but never annoying. Fast service, super friendly crew. This is a genuine Mexican spot, the kind where you don't need a menu explanation. You just point and eat. I appreciated that. Simple, honest food served with care. That's it.

Quick, friendly lunch service
Good food, great service
Carnitas platter just okay

Tampico Grill surprised me. I went in for a quick lunch, and the steak tacos were amazing. The meat was seasoned well, cooked right, and piled high. Portions are generous. I had leftovers, which never happens. The service was quick and friendly, perfect for a workday escape. The carnitas platter was just okay, though. It didn't match the steak tacos' energy. But I'd still come back for those tacos. Good food, great service. Tampico Grill is a reliable stop if you're in the area and hungry for something solid.

Smashing Grapes is a different kind of taco experience. It's upscale, with live music and a warm, sophisticated vibe. The braised short rib tacos are tender and rich, the kind of thing you savor slowly. Presentation is top-tier; the plate looks like art. Service is exceptional and personalized, which makes the higher price easier to swallow. This isn't a grab-and-go spot. It's a sit-down, take-your-time kind of place. If you want a taco that feels like a special occasion, this is your move. Just don't expect street taco chaos.

The Food Market is a local favorite that actually deserves the hype. The tuna tacos were a surprise hit, and the Brussels sprouts are worth an order on their own. Cocktails impress, especially the Bohemian Raspberry, which is dangerously easy to sip. Quality ingredients survive the microwave here, which is a weird compliment but accurate. The staff is friendly, and Thursday nights get busy. I waited a bit for a seat, but it was worth it. The drive from anywhere in Columbia is manageable. I'd do it again, probably for those tuna tacos.

Chicatana feels like a secret, but everyone seems to know about it. Handmade tortillas make a huge difference. The chapulines tacos are adventurous, but not just for shock value; they're actually delicious. The al pastor might be the best thing on the menu, and I say that after trying a lot. Every day there's a great menu plus specials that change things up. Jose and the crew make you feel like a regular even on your first visit. This place has heart. I left with a full stomach and a plan to return.

I remember when The Angry Jerk was bland. Not anymore. This place transformed, and I'm not sure what changed, but the sauce game is strong now. Authentic Caribbean spice mastery shows in every bite. The portions leave you wanting more, which is both a compliment and a warning. Late-night deals are worth chasing if you're out near Merriweather. I had the jerk chicken tacos, and they were brilliant. Big flavor, real heat, no shortcuts. This is a welcome surprise in the area. I'll be back for the late-night specials.

Tequila & Mezcal was packed on a Sunday, and I get it. The owners were working the floor, which you don't see enough. Drinks are original and absolutely amazing. The food is the best kind of background to a good hangout, simple and satisfying. Our server was friendly and attentive, even with the crowd. They also handle issues well, like when my friend brought a dog and seating got complicated. They fixed it without drama. This place is dog friendly and people friendly. I'd come back for the drinks alone. Solid spot.
