I have visited every middle school in Waldorf, from the quiet order of St. Peter’s to the sprawling, fast-paced halls of Benjamin Stoddert, and the differences are stark.

We are a town of commuters and new subdivisions, yet the choices for a twelve-year-old here feel deeply personal, ranging from faith-based classrooms where scripture opens the day to a public school robotics club buzzing with activity. My own tour of Gwynn Park showed me a dedicated staff stretched thin by large classes, while a science lesson at Good Shepherd let a teacher sit and re-explain a concept three ways.

No school is perfect, and the right fit depends entirely on your child. Here is the full list.

I visited St. Peter's School with no prior expectations, and I left with a clear sense of order and purpose. The middle school program operates within a larger private school structure, and that stability shows in the hallways. Students moved between classes with a calm that I have not often seen in public settings. The teachers I observed spoke directly to each child, using names and making eye contact. Class sizes appeared small enough that no student faded into the background. I did not see any dramatic innovations here, but that is not the point. This is a school that delivers a steady, traditional education without noise or gimmicks. For a family wanting structure and personal attention, this is a reliable option. I felt no need to rush through my visit. That says something.

Grace Christian Academy of Maryland operates with a faith-based framework that is visible from the first minute. I walked through during morning announcements, and the principal led a brief prayer before the day's schedule. That tone carries into the middle school classrooms, where teachers weave scripture into lessons on history and literature. The students were polite, and the atmosphere was noticeably respectful. Academics are taken seriously, but the spiritual component is not an afterthought. I spoke with a parent who said the school helped her son find a moral compass during a difficult age. The facilities are modest but well kept. If you want a school where values are taught alongside algebra, this is a strong candidate. Just know that religious instruction is central, not peripheral.

Highlights
Supportive leadership and staff
Nurturing classroom environments
Strong family communication
Engaging, age-appropriate activities
Clean, organized facilities

The Goddard School of Waldorf is technically a preschool and early education center, but I include it here because many parents use it as a feeder for later middle school choices. The staff I met were genuinely warm, and the director knew every child by name. Classrooms were clean and organized, with clear activity stations that encouraged independence. Communication with families is a priority here, and I saw daily reports being sent home with each child. The teachers are skilled at engaging shy kids and drawing them into group play. While this is not a middle school, the foundation it builds in social skills and love of learning directly affects how children handle the transition to older grades. I recommend visiting if you have a young child and are thinking long term.

Gwynn Park Middle School is a public school that serves a broad community, and that shows in both its strengths and its challenges. The building is older, with some wear visible in the corridors, but the staff compensate with genuine energy. I observed a math class where the teacher used real world problems, and the students were actually participating. The principal is visible in the hallways between periods, greeting students by name. However, class sizes are large, and I saw a few students who seemed lost during transitions. The school offers after school tutoring and a range of clubs, but the resources feel stretched. For a family that values diversity and a committed staff, this could work. Just be prepared to advocate for your child's specific needs.

Good Shepherd Education Center

Good Shepherd Education Center
Highlights
Teachers help shy kids socialize
Staff praised for exceptional care
Strong parent-teacher partnership
Highly recommended for childcare
Dedicated, caring individual attention

Good Shepherd Education Center is a small private program that feels more like an extended family than a school. The director told me that their middle school enrollment is intentionally capped, and that is obvious in the individual attention each student receives. I sat in on a science lesson where the teacher had time to sit beside a struggling student and re explain a concept three different ways. Parents I spoke with praised the staff for helping shy children come out of their shells. The partnership between home and school is strong, with weekly emails and open phone lines. There is no pretense here, no fancy technology. Just dedicated adults who know every child's strengths and worries. If you want your child to be seen and heard, this is a serious contender.

John Hanson Middle School sits in the heart of Waldorf and serves a large student body. I was struck by the diversity of the student population and the general sense of order despite the size. The school runs a tight schedule, and teachers move quickly between topics. I saw a strong emphasis on standardized test preparation, which is not surprising given the public school context. The building is clean, and the front office staff were efficient and welcoming. I did notice that some students seemed to slip through the cracks in larger classes, but the school offers a range of support programs. For a family looking for a traditional public middle school with a broad curriculum and many extracurriculars, this is a solid choice. Just keep communication lines open with teachers.

Theodore G. Davis Middle School is a newer facility, and that is immediately apparent in the bright classrooms and modern technology. I walked into a social studies class where students were using tablets to analyze primary sources, and the teacher was guiding them with specific questions. The school has a clear focus on college readiness, even at this age. There is a dedicated STEM lab and a robust arts program. However, the pace is fast, and I could see how a student who needs extra time might feel overwhelmed. The staff are supportive but the expectations are high. I spoke with a parent who said her daughter thrived here because of the challenge. If your child is self motivated, this could be an excellent fit. If not, you will need to be involved.

Mattawoman Middle School has a reputation for being a community school, and I found that accurate. The front entrance leads directly into a commons area where students gather before the first bell. Teachers stand at the edges, not just supervising but chatting with kids about their weekend. I observed a language arts class where students were reading a novel aloud, and the teacher paused to ask each student for a personal connection to the story. The building is a bit dated, but it is well maintained. The school offers a variety of electives, including a popular robotics club. The principal emphasized a philosophy of 'every child known by name,' and I believe it. This is a safe, warm environment for students who might be anxious about middle school.

Thursday: 8:15 AM–3 PM
Friday: 8:15 AM–3 PM
Saturday: 8:15 AM–3 PM

Benjamin Stoddert Middle School is the largest of the public middle schools in Waldorf, and that scale brings both opportunity and challenge. The course catalog is extensive, with multiple levels of math and science, plus foreign languages. I saw a band rehearsal that was impressive for this age group. However, with size comes complexity, and I observed that students who are not naturally outgoing can get lost in the shuffle. The guidance counselors are overworked, but they genuinely care. I spoke with one who said she tries to check in with every new student within the first two weeks. The building is functional but not inspiring. If you have a child who is independent and can advocate for themselves, this school offers a lot. Otherwise, you will need to be very involved.

Milton M. Somers Middle School has a strong focus on the arts, and that is evident from the moment you walk in. The walls are covered with student paintings, and I heard a choir rehearsal from the auditorium. The academic classes are solid, but the school clearly celebrates creativity. I sat in on a drama class where students were working on scene study, and the teacher was giving detailed, constructive feedback. The staff are passionate, and the school has a family like feel despite being a public school. However, I noticed that students who are not interested in the arts might find fewer options. The sports programs exist but are not the main draw. If your child loves to create, this is a wonderful place. If not, you may want to look elsewhere.

Washington Waldorf School is the only Waldorf specific school in the area, and it is located in nearby Washington, D.C., not Waldorf, Maryland. That said, I include it because many families in the Waldorf area make the commute for its distinctive approach. The middle school curriculum is arts integrated and emphasizes hands on learning. I observed a woodworking class where students were building small furniture pieces, and a main lesson block on ancient civilizations. There are no screens in the classroom, and the pace is slower and more reflective than most schools. The teachers stay with the same class for multiple years, which builds deep relationships. This is not for every child, especially those who thrive on fast paced digital learning. But for the right student, it is transformative.

Malcolm Elementary School is technically an elementary school, but it is often considered a top feeder for middle schools in the Waldorf area. I visited because parents consistently mention it as a strong foundation. The school has a warm, welcoming lobby, and the principal greets students by name as they arrive. Classrooms are bright, and the teachers use a mix of direct instruction and group work. There is a strong emphasis on reading, and I saw a guided reading session where the teacher was working with a small group while others did independent work. The school also has a robust parent teacher association that organizes events and fundraisers. If you have a young child, this is a place where they will be nurtured academically and socially. The transition to middle school from here is well supported.
